Lewis W. Hine (1874–1940) was an American photographer and sociologist known for using his camera as a tool for social reform. His most famous work documented child labor in the early 20th century, exposing harsh working conditions in factories, mills, and mines. Hine’s powerful images helped drive public awareness and led to labor law reforms, particularly through his work with the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He also photographed immigrants at Ellis Island and workers building the Empire State Building. His legacy remains a cornerstone of documentary photography and social justice advocacy.
