Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Vertumnus (1591)
"Vertumnus" is a famous Mannerist painting created around 1590–1591 by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. The artwork is a portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, but with a twist—he is depicted as Vertumnus, the Roman god of seasons, change, and plant growth.
What makes the piece so unique is Arcimboldo's signature style: the entire face and figure are made up of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants, arranged in such a way that they form a detailed and surprisingly lifelike human portrait. This imaginative composition symbolizes Rudolf II’s connection to nature and his power over the natural world, aligning him with divine order and abundance.
