The Map of Hell (1855) by Michelangelo Caetani is a remarkable visual interpretation of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno from The Divine Comedy. Caetani, an Italian scholar and artist, sought to graphically represent the structure of hell as described in Dante’s epic poem. The map details the nine concentric circles of hell, each representing a different sin and its corresponding punishment. These range from Limbo in the first circle to the treacherous frozen lake of Cocytus in the ninth.
